Dental Implant is a screw which is made of titanium to replace the root of a tooth. In dentistry, dental implants are used to replace both, a single tooth or multiple teeth. An attachment called an ‘abutment’ is connected to the dental implants after the healing process is over. The abutments are used to attach a dental crown, bridge, or removable denture to the implants.

Dental Implants can be used to replace any amount of teeth, from a single missing tooth to a full oral restoration. We do not replace every missing tooth with a Dental Implant in our dental centre. If you have a gap where 3-4 teeth are missing along the same row, we place 2 Dental Implants. These Implants support a 3 or 4 units Zirconia Bridge. Alternatively, if you only have one tooth missing, we place 1 single Dental Implant and Zirconia Crown. If you don’t have teeth in your upper and lower jaws, we usually place 6 implants in the upper jaw and 6 implants in the lower jaw, 12 in total. This system is called the All-on-6 concept. This concept is the most popular in the treatment of edentulous cases all over the world.

    3. Dental Implant Steps: What to Expect During Your Procedure

    3.1 Consultation and planning

During the first consultation, our prosthodontist and oral surgeon evaluates the X-ray and consult with the patient. We use specialized, high-tech 3D imaging to visualize the bone structure and ensure proper conditions. We evaluate bone and gum tissue, and to determine the proper spacing for the implants.

    3.2 Dental implantation

Single dental implant placement to a jaw that has appropriate bone width and density will take approximately 15-20 minutes. Depending on the number of implants to be placed, bone width and density, the whole process may take up to 2 hours. After the surgical procedure is performed according to the protocol, the patient is given advice and instructions for the healing period (necessary time for the bone recovery). If no sufficient bone tissue is available for dental implantation, a special dental surgical procedure called bone augmentation (bone graft) or Sinus Lifting is provided to replace missing bone tissue. And if you want to know if you need Sinus Lift and Bone Graft Please read the following article: What is Sinus Lifting and Bone Grafting.

    3.3 Healing time

During the next 2-3 months (healing time) after dental implantation, the tooth implant heals under the gum, i.e. the dental implant integrates into the jawbone. During this period the patient has to maintain perfect oral hygiene and take medications as instructed.

    3.4 Final restoration

After the healing period, it is time to build the crown, the bridge, or the prosthesis for an entire upper or lower jaw. There are many types of restoration on dental implants from simple solutions (single crown on one tooth implant or bridge on two dental implants) to full restorations (full bridge on 6-8 dental implants, All-on-4 fixed dentures)

    3.5 Check-up

The long-term success of the dental implant and the artificial tooth built on it cannot be guaranteed without careful oral hygiene; therefore, it is very important that the patient maintains, and improves if necessary, his or her oral hygiene. After the prosthetic procedure, patients have a check-up examination at least every year to check oral hygiene and the function and stability of the tooth implant.

    4. How long does the dental implant procedure take?

You will need to make two visits to complete your treatment. For the first visit, you need to stay 5 days and for a second visit, you need to stay 8 days. During the first appointment, your surgeon places the implant in the jawbone. Then, the surgeon covers the implant with gum tissue to allow the implant to heal properly. The healing period may vary 3-6 months depending on the patient’s bone condition. On a second visit to Turkey, the Implant Crowns or Dental Implant Bridges will be fitted to the Implants and your treatment will be completed. If you want to wait longer than 3-6 months for your Implant Crowns this will not affect your procedure and is perfectly safe. The choice is up-to-you depending on your available holiday dates and of course your budget.

4.1 Am I a good candidate for the implant treatment?

Dental implants can be placed in the jaw of patients of any age (with fully developed jawbones), if they have a sufficient quantity and quality of jawbone tissue available. Most healthy individuals that maintain good oral hygiene are suitable candidates for teeth implants.

4.2 Is dental implant treatment risky?

Implant treatment is not an experimental approach; It is a proven, state-of-the-art medical dental technique that has been scientifically tested and used for decades by surgeons and dentists worldwide. Possible risk factors may vary depending on the condition of each patient. Limited wound healing due to poor oral hygiene or pre-existing medical conditions (such as diabetes and osteoporosis) may reduce the possibility of the implant remaining in place. At Dental Excellence Turkey, our specialist doctors will evaluate whether dental implants are the right option for you, as there are potential risks with each surgical procedure.

4.3 How long will my dental implants last?

Dental implants last for a lifetime in healthy individuals who maintain good oral hygiene.

    5. What factors impact dental implant success?

    5.1 Gum disease

Healthy gums are a criteria for dental implant surgery, and you can’t have this procedure with active gum disease. Gum disease is an infection that can damage the gums and jawbone. An untreated infection could develop around the implant and lead to failure. See a dentist to treat gum disease before getting an implant.

    5.2 Smoking

Smoking can also cause dental implant failure because it restricts blood flow to the gums, slowing the healing process. Multiple research studies show that smokers can have a dental implant failure rate up to 20 percent.

    5.3 Insufficient Jawbone

A successful procedure is also dependent on sufficient bone to support the implant. Without enough healthy bone, the surgeon cannot surgically place the implant into your jaw. Bone loss can happen with osteoporosis. This condition develops when bone density decreases. Bones become fragile and there is the increased risk of fractures. Severe gum disease can also cause deterioration of bones in the mouth.

    5.4 Poor Oral Hygiene

The ability to practice good oral hygiene after a dental implant also has an impact on the success rate. You are not an appropriate candidate for a dental implant if you have limitations that affect your range of motion or interfere with the ability to thoroughly clean your teeth.

    5.5 Medical conditions

Dental implant failure is a possibility if you are diagnosed with an autoimmune disease or conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes , which causes the body to heal at a slower pace. Slow healing can prevent osseointegration, where the implant fuses or integrates with your jawbone. The use of certain medications like heartburn medications, antidepressant medication can also lead to dental implant failure.

    6. Why should I have my Dental Implants in Turkey?

The quality of dental implant treatment in Turkey is world-class with many top dental professionals. Nevertheless, the cost of dental implants in Turkey is around 30 to 40 percent of the costs in the UK, European countries, or the USA. Other dental procedures are also significantly low-priced. The high-grade materials, top brand technologies, and FDA-approved materials that are used in the UK and Europe are also used for dental treatment in Turkey. However, the cost of living, running a dental clinic, and wages are much lower.

Another disadvantage of getting an implant in the UK or European countries is the waiting time. On average, you can wait at least 6 months to more than a year for a first appointment only. Whereas, over in Turkey, the whole process of getting dental implants, including all the follow-up appointments and check-ups, does not take any longer than 6 months. If your jawbone is suitable enough at the first appointment, the whole procedure can be done in one day. At the second appointment in 3-4 months, crowns are placed in 8 days.

Turkey is the perfect holiday destination. You can also experience a wonderful holiday when you come for your dental treatment. A five-star hotel in Turkey will not cost you more than 40 to 50 pounds per night.

And lastly, in comparison to Mexico, the Turkish government strictly regulates the dental industry for international patients, so dentists can not operate and do procedures without at least 5 years of expertise.
