A dental implant is a screw which is made of titanium to replace the root of a tooth. In dentistry, dental implants are used to replace either a single tooth or multiple teeth. An attachment called an ‘abutment’ is connected to the dental implants after the healing process is over. The abutments are used to attach a dental crown, bridge, or removable denture to the implants.

At Dental Excellence Turkey, diagnosis, planning and integration of the implant surgery are just as important, if not more important, than the surgery itself. If you are looking for dental implants in Antalya, Dental Excellence Turkey is the best choice!

How many dental implants do I need?

The number of implants you need is determined by the width of the missing tooth area. Dental implants can be used to replace any number of teeth, from a single missing tooth to a full oral restoration. We do not replace every missing tooth with a dental implant in our dental centre. If you have a gap where 3-4 teeth are missing along the same row, we place 2 dental implants. These implants support a 3 or 4-unit zirconia bridge. Alternatively, if you only have one tooth missing, we place 1 single dental implant and zirconia crown. If you don’t have teeth in your upper and lower jaws, we usually place 6 implants in the upper jaw and 6 implants in the lower jaw, 12 in total. This system is called ‘All-on-6’. This concept is the most popular in the treatment of edentulous cases all over the world.

Dental implant steps: What to expect during your procedure

1. Consultation and planning

During the first consultation, our prosthodontist and oral surgeon evaluate the X-ray and consult with the patient. We use specialised, high-tech 3D imaging to visualise the bone structure and ensure proper conditions. We evaluate bone and gum tissue to determine the proper spacing for the implants.

2. Dental implantation

Single dental implant placement in a jaw that has appropriate bone width and density will take approximately 15-20 minutes. Depending on the number of implants to be placed, bone width, the whole process may change. After the surgical procedure is performed according to the protocol, the patient is given advice and instructions for the healing period (necessary time for the bone recovery). If no sufficient bone tissue is available for dental implantation, a special dental surgical procedure called ‘bone augmentation’ (bone graft) or ‘sinus lifting’ is provided to replace missing bone tissue.

3. Healing time

During the next 3-6 months (healing time) after dental implantation, the tooth implant heals under the gum, i.e., dental implant integrates into the jawbone. During this period the patient has to maintain perfect oral hygiene and take medications as instructed.

4. Final restoration

After the healing period, it is time to build the crown, the bridge, or the prosthesis for an entire upper or lower jaw. There are many types of restoration on dental implants, from simple solutions (single crown on one tooth implant or bridge on two dental implants) to full restorations (All-on-6 dental implants or All-on-4 dental implants)

What factors impact dental implant success?

Gum disease

Healthy gums are a criterion for dental implant surgery, and you can’t have this procedure with active gum disease. Gum disease is an infection that can damage the gums and jawbone. An untreated infection could develop around the implant and lead to failure. See a dentist to treat gum disease before getting an implant.

Smoking

Smoking can also cause dental implant failure because it restricts blood flow to the gums, slowing the healing process.

Poor oral hygiene

Maintaining good oral health ensures that dental implants remain durable and function properly. Brushing your teeth and flossing daily helps keep the area around the implant clean. Poor oral hygiene can lead to the buildup of food particles around dental implants. Over time, these food particles can harbour microorganisms. As a result, bone density may decrease, potentially causing the implant to loosen or fail.

Annual dental checkups also help detect any issues with the implants early on. If necessary, the implants are cleaned and the zirconia crowns are polished.

Medical conditions

Be sure to tell your dentist about any medications you are taking. If you have a chronic condition, let your doctor know in advance that you are planning to get an implant. If you have diabetes, make sure to get it under control first. Your blood sugar level needs to be below a certain threshold. It is helpful to discuss these matters with your dentist.

Why should I have my dental implants in Turkey?

The quality of dental implant treatment in Turkey is world-class with many top dental professionals. Nevertheless, the cost of dental implants in Turkey is around 60 to 70 per cent of the costs in the UK, European countries, or the USA. Other dental procedures are also significantly low-priced. The high-grade materials, top brand technologies, and FDA-approved materials that are used in the UK and Europe are also used for dental treatment in Turkey. However, the cost of living, running a dental clinic, and wages are much lower.

Another disadvantage of getting an implant in the UK or European countries is the waiting time. On average, you can wait at least 6 months to more than a year for a first appointment only. Whereas, over in Turkey, the whole process of getting dental implants, including all the follow-up appointments and check-ups, does not take any longer than 7-8 months. If your jawbone is suitable enough at the first appointment, the whole procedure can be done in one day. At the second appointment in 4-6 months, crowns are placed in 8 days.

How to choose a dental clinic in Turkey?

Antalya, Istanbul, and Izmir welcome thousands of tourists for dental treatment every year. And these are the cities where you can find the best dental clinics. While doing your research, you can contact clinics directly and ask all the questions regarding the chosen treatment.

You can check reviews of the patients on the web pages of clinics, on third-party websites, and on social media.

Every dental clinic has a comprehensive portfolio of before and after photos. You can evaluate whether there are results that will meet your expectations in these photos. But keep in mind that these are often representations of patients’ wishes and preferences. Color, form, natural appearance, whiteness may vary according to patient preferences.
